The Amazon Kindle – Is It Any Good?

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Amazon have been promoting their Kindle to be THE eBook reader that everyone should have. This may not happen, though Amazon are really going out to show the kindle is way ahead of the other eBook readers.

The size and weight of the Kindle is certainly something they can be proud of. It is 5.3 inches x 7.5 inches and weighs in at only 8.7 ounces. Small and compact, you can take it anywhere and use it anywhere. The battery life of the Kindle is quite lengthy, it has a reading capability of up to 2 weeks without using the WI-FI and 10 days with the WIFI active. Charging of the Kindle can also be done quite fast so without waiting too long you can be up and running again.

The Kindle also has the E-Ink which is a nice feature. It is said to mimic the reading of a real book and is keeping it’s word with that. For those of you who have trouble reading eBooks on an LCD screen for a long period of time, E-Ink is the solution.

There is a small downside to the Kindle and that is it’s lack of colour support. Everything will appear in black, white and shades of grey, this could be a setback for those of you that want to view anything colourful on the Kindle.

Flipping through pages was a minor drawback of the previous version of the Kindle and it was also quite slow. The touch screen function was not very good and could interfere with the reading of your book. The new version now has a solution with buttons on the side that are there to make the page turning function more user friendly and is built with comfort in mind.

You can surf the internet on the Kindle with it’s built in WI-FI capability, but due to the lack of colour support the pages will only display in monochrome. This can be a downside to the Kindle and sometimes you wonder if it would have been better off without it’s support for WI-FI.

The internal memory has a storage capability of up to 3500 eBooks so you won’t find yourself having to remove older books in order to download new ones. Apps are also available to enable you to read a Kindle eBook on the iPhone or PC.

Besides reading your eBooks and (if you really need to) surfing the internet, there is not much more you can do with the Kindle. Amazon have not yet introduced any kind of open standard so there will be no apps within it. 3rd party applications should be introduced in the near future but given the specifications and restrictions the amount of apps is going to be small.

Most of the books you read will have Digital Rights Management (DRM) on them. Some of you might remember the scene Amazon caused when they automatically deleted a book banned from Amazon from every single Kindle that bought that book. So there is a small issue with privacy and what Amazon can do to your books inside Kindle.

Can The IPad Replace A Laptop?

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

The iPad is popular, that much is know, as was the iPhone and iPod. It was preordered by hundred of thousands and bought by millions for a host of different reasons. Steve Jobs seems to think it can replace laptops, but how much of an edge does the iPad actually have over a laptop? This isn’t a new school of thought, so let’s see, can the iPad replace laptop?

Size, Weight And Security

Lighter than most, if not all laptops, and thinner than most as well, the iPad is the easiest of the two to carry around. Apple sells a specially made case that can improve handling fatigue (due to the method of holding the iPad) by doubling as a stand for the device. However, taking into account the intended use of the iPad – to primarily surf the web and read eBooks – competition with a laptop does not immediately spring to mind. Laptops, unlike iPads, are designed with a clamshell design, providing an extra measure of security for the screen that the iPad simply lacks. The weight and size of the laptop is larger in both cases, but the laptop’s own intended use is much more broadly designed.

User Friendly?

Never let it be said that the iPad is unfriendly to its users, as it features a very intuitive touch-based system. While it may cost a hefty $499, the iPad provides the largest of app databases. The simple tap on an app will run it and various movements of the fingers can manipulate items to do as you please. The larger screen allows for more advanced usage of certain programs, but it’s limitation of only running one program at a time severely reduces its multi-tasking ability. Laptops begin to show superiority in this aspect, providing a peak in multi-tasking capabilities with multi-core processors and an operating system capable of running dozens of different programs at once. The touch ability in Windows 7, however, is bad compared to the iPad. It is held back by incompetent software. You may have to decide between multi-tasking or user friendliness at the end of the day.

Features

The iPad has no SD card slot, no integrated webcam, no USB slots or VGA slot to plug into an external monitor. In fact, to have any of these ‘extra’ sockets, you need to purchase another piece of equipment. Laptop users may be feeling bitter at this point, as they were previously offered all of that, perhaps more than one of each in some cases, plus extras like bluetooth. The laptop simply has more hardware available.

A lot of different people are going to want to use your iPad as an E-book reader. While this might seem simple enough, you might want to pick up GoodReader. This app will give you the means to change the format of any e-book that you are going to download. This makes it easier to read and navigate, as it fits the iPad format exactly then.

You might be delighted to learn that you are going to be able to access your Netflix account and stream movies and television shows instantly to your iPad. This means that you are taking a very literal library of thousands of video files with you everywhere that you need to go. So the choices and options are in fact endless. Plus, Netflix is only ten dollars a month and this application is free.

What Is The Newest Must-have Product

Friday, March 12th, 2010

An iPad Tablet is the latest invention by The Apple Computer Company. It is called the iPad and literally looks like a small tablet (biblical style). The iPad is about the size of a book held open in your hands, which is actually it’s primary use. Many people use it like its competitor’s product, the Amazon Kindle. IPads have a touch screen and are very much like a large iPhone.

The iPad will be available to buy by the end of March, 2010. Orders have started since the product was officially released and it has sold thousands in the first month. This is because its first major appearance anywhere in public was when it was used on stage at the Grammy Awards. The host read the winner from it.

From behind it looks like a small, closed Apple laptop. From the front, it looks like an iPhone five times its normal size. It has no keyboard or mouse that come with it, though it is very sophisticated technology that is able to play music, record sound, use almost all current Macintosh programs for computer and phone, connect to the web, download many different types of files, and make phone calls.

It weighs just a pound and a half, which is amazing considering its memory and battery capabilities. It connects to WiFi. On the outside, it is easily the simplest of modern Apple products. There is only one USB port and one headphone jack. There are speakers and a microphone built in. That is it.

This is the brainchild of seventeen years of work. It started in 1993 and was finally announced as ready in 2010. It has had more hype and publicity than any other Apple product, which will account for its sales more than for its technology.

This is even including the price which many view as high. The iPad starts at five hundred dollars without any keyboard or mouse. Those need to be bought on their own. Sales have not slowed, but some are surprised by the product’s limitations. It cannot operate more than one program at a time nor are there video recording options. Many believe these problems will be soon corrected and upgraded.

There has been a lot of controversy regarding the name. Some find it to have repugnant associations and some are upset that the name was not originally theirs, but was rather taken after another product named iPAD was abandoned. Nevertheless, Apple cannot go back on the name now since it has gained so much publicity and is ready to go on shelves shortly.

Lawyers from both sides are unsure to whom the name legally belongs and if there is an impending law suit. It is doubtful it will harm sales at all, though it may delay the product reaching shelves. If there is one, it will be cutting it very close to the release date.

Touch Screen Laptops Come In Different Formats

Friday, March 5th, 2010

There are essentially two types of mobile touch screen computers. The first type is the convertible laptop which is popular among the typical computer users and the second type is the slate PC. The slate PC is geared toward a specified function making it particularly useful for professions that require what the device offers over the other type of touch screen computer. The slate PC is a much simpler tablet style PC while the convertible laptop can take the form of a standard laptop or a tablet. The versatility of a convertible laptop makes it useful for typical computing purposes with the addition of having touch recognition.

The slate PC is a single piece where the screen makes up most of one of the large surfaces. This is in contrast to the convertible laptop with looks and functions much more like a standard laptop that opens and shuts. The slate PC is essentially a tablet with no keyboard or mouse pad but the option to use those peripherals is made possible through the USB connection. Otherwise the all user interface and command inputs are communicated to the computer entirely through the touch screen.

What makes the slate PC so useful is their dedicated purposefulness makes it a great tool for certain job functions. It is much lighter than the convertible laptop making it more portable and the lesser weight makes a difference for someone who has to carry the computer in their arms all day. Think about the waiter taking your order into a tablet PC or a nurse who has to take notes while following a doctor around the hospital.

The convertible touch screen laptops offer their own advantages and it is quite obvious what they are. These devices can transform from a standard laptop into a tablet. This is made possible by the design of the hinge which holds the screen and the rest of the computer together on a swivel allowing it to rotate 180 degrees and fold back over the keyboard screen side up. This makes it more effective when writing or drawing on the screen like a traditional notepad.

In the tablet mode, a student can create hand written notes and the versatility of the software will allow the user to draw diagrams into the document. This is much more useful than typing notes with a keyboard into a word processor where drawing objects is not as easy. It is also useful for presentations and making highlights and underlines in the middle of a live presentation will impress some bosses. It offers the functionality of a regular computer with the added capability of a touch sensitive display.

There are obvious advantages of both types of touch screen computers and deciding which one you need is really not a hard decision. Most common personal computer users will want the versatility of a convertible touch screen laptop while those looking for something to help their profession will want the tablet or slate PC.

Learn more at the Touch Screen Laptop Guide where you will find more information about different types of laptop computers with touch sensitive screens and read reviews on popular items like the Dell touch screen laptop.
